NaNoWriMo2017 #1: Writing Schedule, Motivation and Quality Expectations

So it began!

When you read this, I will be seven days in the challenge.
Seven days in my story…
So how does it goes? How do I feel? Amazing?
…yes and no.

My current word count is at: 12.351 words

I am happy with the number! I never thought I would be able to get more than 500 words, to be honest. My biggest fear was to sit in front of the computer and have nothing to write about. Nothing to say…

Writing Schedule

I am not writing like I thought I would . I planned to rest on Saturday and to write on the other days around 2000 words. But I wrote on Saturday – I wrote on everyday up till now. My first day was great with 3654 words, but on Sunday I was really lazy and got only to 667 words. But over all I am happy and I think it works for me best, to write every day. I think it is a good think not to stop, but to write only as much I can.

I good and bad. I really like to write this story, but I think I am a perfectionist. But you can’t be like that, while doing NaNo. But I have fun and I love that i do something creative. First Inktober drawings, now a NaNo story. I think I never wrote something so long before and that makes me a little proud of myself. So I try to keep it up over the next three weeks, but I know that will be exhausting. After NaNo I definitely need no challenge for some time.

Quality Expectations

This is something that bothers me a lot!
I know NaNo should help to write a draft. A first version of a story. Or it can be, I am sure there a people out there who can write something that is perfect when they are finished. But I can’t.
So I let’s think I will finish this task successfully and I will have 50.000 – or some more – words at the end of November. Will this be good enough to show around and publish here, for example?
My answer is no – not my story. I will have to work on it.

So is it really helpful to have a quantity of words you are not satisfied with, that you will have to edit and sometimes rewrite? Or would it be more beneficial to work in a longer period of time on something with more quality?

But would you write it with more time?

I wouldn’t – so NaNo is fine. I think I just have to accept 50.000 word are not the end, I will have to work more on it over the next weeks or months.

…but how will that will work…

So that is a little NaNo update from me.

How are your projects going? How are you? Are you satisfied with your progress?

Thank you for your time and cheers ❤

  1. Hi dear! Sounds like your first couple of days went well.
12k is amazing! 🎉 Great job!

I hear you on the first draft woes. Sometimes it can be discouraging. But don’t worry! I don’t know anyone who wrote a “perfect” book on the first draft, and the point of NaNo is to get words on the page – not to have a “perfect” book.
And you are right – I don’t think I’d write any better with more time – just fiddle with it more. It’s more important to get the words down at this point.

Hope the writing continues to go well! 🙂

  2. Thank you so much River!!
I am now on the pint to accept, that it is indeed a draft, but maybe something I can continue or even make better…

How is you NaNo going? *Motivational Wave* ❤
